eye diseases/glaucoma

Glaucoma is the destruction of optic nerves due to high intraocular pressure. Unfortunately this disorder has no symptom for long time and the patient has no visual complaint. When the patient starts to complain, destruction in optic nerves might reach a level which cannot be treated. Therefore early diagnosis has vital importance in glaucoma. For an early diagnosis, examination + OCT techniques + cornea thickness measurement + visual area examination must be applied.

Intraocular pressure is accepted normal in the range 10-20 mmHg. Values higher than 20 mmHg are defined as glaucoma disorder suspicion.

If optic nerve damages are detected together with intraocular pressure, the case is glaucoma.

For some eyes, optic nerves are not damaged by pressure above normal but optic nerves are damaged by pressure which might be accepted as normal in some other eyes.

Optic nerve damages are detected by OCT in early stages and by visual field check with computer in later stages.

Glaucoma must be dealt as a lifetime disorder. If there is not an emergency case, beginning therapy of open angle glaucoma is carried out by eye drops or SLT.

Success of the treatment is measured by control examinations and OCT analysis frequently.

Patients treated for glaucoma should visit doctor once in every 3-4 months for control examination.
