What is cornea transplant? (Keratoplasty)

Cornea transplant is the process of replacing deformed and nontransparent cornea with a healthy cornea tissue received from dead persons. Cornea transplant is called as eye transplant among people as a misstatement. Cornea layer is the transplanted layer of the eye with today’s medical technology. Eyeball is not possible to transplant.
 
Why cornea is transplanted? 
 
Cornea tissue which is transparent and veinless may become blurred due to various reasons such as formation of scar tissue or eudema (distension). Blurring on cornea may cause the light is not refracted smooth and sight is degenerated. In some cases, severe pain may appear together with blurred cornea. Cornea transplantation may be carried out to reduce pain, to correct sight or to protect eye integrity. 
 
In which circumstances, cornea transplant is required? 
 
-          If the cells ensuring cornea transparency are damaged after eye surgery and cornea become blurred.
-          If domed structure of cornea is deformed, for instance if it becomes conical (keratoconus)
-          In the event of certain cornea disorders transmitted genetically 
-          If scar tissue or new veins are formed on cornea due to infection (for instance; herpes – herpes virus – after keratitis)
-          If cornea becomes blurred or its integrity is damaged heavily due to accidents
-          If the body rejects the tissue after cornea transplant
