What is oculoplastic surgery?

Oculoplastic Surgery is a branch of eye science related to lachrymal ducts and orbit (eye socket). Any kind of treatment and plastic surgery applications such as removal of eye bags, replacement eyes, intraocular tumor surgery, Botox are applied in this branch.

Eyelids, lachrymal Duct disorders

Eyelid disorders

Bottom and top eyelids are similar to each other anatomically.  Each eyelid has two important muscles. One is used to open (refractor - levator) and the other is used to close (sphincter – orbicularis oculi) the eyelid. Orbita orbit adipose tissue is located between these two muscles. Bottom eyelid is more still and top eyelid is restless like a windshield wiper. There are some congenital or age associated disorders on eyelids. The most frequent type is ptosis of eyelid. When it is congenital it depends on less development of the muscle lifting eyelid. It may appear age associated too. The reason is wear of muscle lifting eyelid in due course. Treatment of both cases is surgery.

Cosmetic eyelid surgery.

Top eyelid skin which is too thin prolapses due to continuous movement and adipose tissue surrounding eye are bagged prominent particularly on bottom eyelid. Treatment is surgery. Sagged skin and adipose tissue are taken.

Other Deformations on Eyelids

Some other deformations may be encountered on eyelids. Eyelids may turn inwards (entropium) or outwards (ectropium) due to aging. This case is generally seen on eyelids and depends upon aging and the treatment is surgery. Connective tissues keeping eyelid in place and the muscle lifting the eyelid are loosen. What to do are repair of connective tissue and the muscle.

Facial palsy;

The muscle closing eyelid is paralyzed and eye cannot be closed hence the eye is left open always. It may occur after salivary gland and brain surgeries or spontaneously. Primarily synthetic tears are used but if the palsy is permanent the only treatment is surgery. If facial palsy is not recovered within 3-6 months, the facial palsy is decided to be permanent. Bottom eyelid is prolapsed generally in old aged patients. A gold weight is placed in top eyelid and loosen connective tissues are repaired as an effective treatment in this disorder.

Malignant tumors on eyelid

Malignant tumors are one kind of disorders formed on eyelid. It is frequently seen as “basal cell carcinoma”.  It appears as a non-healing lesion, growing continuously, itching and bleeding. The treatment is removal of the lesion together with healthy tissue surrounding and restoration of eyelid using some other tissues of the body.
